Christie really inspired me to take charge of my career, rather than letting my career take charge of me. Thanks to Christie, I found the guts to ditch my boring, unfulfilling job and to take a new gig with more possibilities. - Melina Vissat
Several years ago I moved to Italy for a few months with a friend while continuing to work full-time for my consulting firm in DC. And I remember that most of my friends and colleagues were like: "How did you DO that?" And the next thing that they invariably said was: "I could never do it."
What was interesting about that experience was that it was easy. It was easy because all I did was ask. I asked my boss if I could go. I asked my friend if he wanted to go with me. I asked Craig's List if anyone wanted to rent my apartment. And everyone said yes....and so I went.
It was so effortless I found it shocking. But I've never forgotten that experience and the lesson that it taught me -- that sometimes all you need in life is to ask in order to receive amazing gifts. And the second lesson that has always stuck with me is that people will often say yes. Even when you think what you are asking for is just this side of lunacy, people will step up to help you accomplish your own personal dreams and wackiness. And something else that is interesting? In my experience, the more insane the request, the bigger the dream, the more you will hear the word yes. I don't know why that is, but it seems to hold true. Maybe it's because when you have a big dream, you are excited, motivated and focused. Your passion shows through when you talk with people and that passion is infectious. And then those people find themselves wanting to help you.
What if you knew you could get people to say yes - what would you ask for?
Think about your life right now: What in life have you wanted, but never asked for?
What would be different if you did?
What do you have to lose by asking?
Are you willing to try it? And by that I mean, really ask for something in your life that you would normally never even voice because you think it is crazy. Something that you dream about during the day, that makes you excited whenever you think of it, and that you need someone's help to achieve.
My last question, which I think is the most important: What do you have to gain by asking for what you want? And how does that thought make you feel?
Now go do it!
